Almost every shipyard delivers their new vessels with a roller reefing system on the forestay, and that is no coincidence. The roller reefing system meets two important needs of modern sailors: safety and ease of use.

Advantages of using a furling system:

  • Being able to set and furl the headsail safely and comfortably from the cockpit (short-handed sailing) is a key advantage of a roller reefing system. It allows sailors to easily adjust the size of the headsail to match changing wind conditions without the need to go to the foredeck. This convenience is particularly beneficial when sailing with a smaller crew or single-handedly, as it reduces the physical effort and potential risks associated with handling the sails. With a roller reefing system, you can quickly and efficiently adapt to different wind strengths, enhancing both safety and comfort during your sailing adventures.
  • For cruising sailors, having a roller reefing system allows them to rely on a single headsail for a wide range of wind conditions. This means that with a well-designed and properly sized headsail, they can comfortably sail in various wind strengths without the need to change sails. When the wind picks up, the headsail can be partially furled or reefed to reduce its size and maintain control and balance on the boat. This convenience eliminates the hassle of changing sails and makes cruising more enjoyable and manageable, especially for those who prefer a more relaxed sailing experience.
  • With a roller reefing system, the headsail remains attached to the furling system even when it is not in use. This means that you don't have to remove, hoist, and stow the headsail for every sailing trip. Instead, you can simply roll it up and leave it on the furling system, ready to be deployed whenever needed. This saves you time and effort, as well as keeps the headsail protected from potential damage or getting wet during storage. When you're ready to sail, you can easily unfurl the headsail and set it up without the need for additional rigging or handling. This convenience is especially beneficial for short trips or when you want to make quick sail adjustments while on the water.

Examples of reputable brands:

  • Seldén Furlex systems
  • Profurl systems
  • Harken
  • Plastimo
  • Facnor

Selden (Furlex), Profurl, Harken, Plastimo, Facnor

Of course, there are more brands available, but the mentioned systems are the most common and offer an excellent price-to-quality ratio. However, these systems cannot be directly compared in terms of price alone.

For example, one system comes complete with a new forestay, reef lines, and reef blocks, while another system only includes the system itself without any additional accessories. There may also be some technical differences between them. One manufacturer may provide a closed system with wet (grease) lubrication, while another offers a more maintenance-friendly open system. In short, each system has its own maintenance requirements. SailSelect is happy to assist you with advice in this regard!

We prefer to carry out the installation and assembly in Volendam, as we have access to a cherry picker, materials, tools, and personnel there. The installation is scheduled by appointment and usually takes place within a half-day. Typically, this is planned when your new headsail is ready or your old sail has been modified for use with the new roller reefing system. This way, you won’t have to miss a day of sailing. This efficient approach allows us to adapt to unforeseen circumstances effectively.
